To tackle youth unemployment in Kashmir, which is over 50% in the age group of 15-17 years, and around 23% in the 18-30 age group, the UGC has taken steps to integrate skill building into higher education with NSQF-compliant courses under National Occupational Standards.

Four skill programmes have commenced at the Government Degree College Sopore with an intake of 50 students in Retail Management, Tourism & Hospitality, IT and International Business Management.
The aim is to use these skills-based courses to make youth job ready on course completion. Developed in consultation with Sector Skill Councils, NSQF-compliant courses also pool in industry experts from the NSDC and are hence believed to be more relevant. Moreover, most of them offer industry placements.
