The Indian skilling landscape has hitherto been fragmented with myriad ministries, agencies and service providers with no clear role of a regulator which has led to duplication and overlapping of processes, functions, assessment and certification. The merging of the National Council for Vocational Training and the National Skill Development Agency into the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) is a much welcome development to usher in standardisation.  Its role as a single overarching umbrella will induce accountability and focus, and build robustness into the system. We have taken up the need for strengthening training and apprenticeships in our post ‘Giving Skill Building a Shot in the Arm’

One key area for the NCVET should be to establish national benchmarks and standards in vocational training around industry requirements. What should be the other priorities of the NCVET as it embarks on its role as the new regulator for skills training in India?
