Sam Smith, Owner at S.G. Heating and Plumbing in Derby (UK) won the Trade Radiators competition and gained himself an apprentice – Jacob Hall, all of 17. In this article, Sam talks about why apprenticeships are important and how the experience is benefiting both Jacob and him.
In Sam’s estimation, apprenticeships are essential for those who want to go into a trade. While college is great for the theory, apprentices gain all the practical tips, shortcuts and skills that are so essential for success at a job. Sam himself finds that he learns much faster when he watches someone do something rather than being told what he must do. As for his apprentice Jacob, he is “…picking up more and more every day” in Sam’s words.
