Skill Building for Chandigarh Youth
Chandigarh police have embarked on a skill development programme approved by the Skill Ministry to train over 500 children from across the city under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna (PMKVY) scheme. Training under the PMKVY is offered free of cost. Children will be trained in vocational skills in job roles such as retail store assistant, beauty and wellness, hospital general assistant, and food and beverage assistant. Training will be delivered in various police stations.
Sanjay Baniwal, IPS, Director General of Police UT, said, ‘This training programme will be benefiting juvenile offenders, victims of crime, underprivileged youths and youth likely to fall into habit of drugs. DGP requested parents to ensure that they should attend this skill development programme regularly. The youth will also be made aware about traffic rules, drug abuse under this programme.’
Odisha Wins Laurels at the India Skills Competition
Earlier in December, Odisha Chief minister Naveen Patnaik said that Odisha was seeing extremely positive results in skill development stemming from the state’s targeted approach on technical education and vocational training. ‘It will certainly help in attracting industries to the state and give a boost to the economic growth of the state. Our robust skill ecosystem will be highly beneficial to our youth and will aid the industrial growth of Odisha.’ Naveen said.
The Minister was speaking at a felicitation event for the winners of India Skills 2018, the national level skills competition. The recent Make in Odisha conclave, and the state’s flagship Biennial Investors’ Meet saw investment intents of Rs 4.19 lakh crore, which has the potential to generate around 6 lakh jobs.
Odisha took home a total of 19 medals including four gold, nine silver and six bronze at the Indian Skills competition in addition to two Medallions of Excellence in categories like water technology, restaurant services, electrical installation, brick laying, health and social services, plastic die engineering, web-design, mechanical computer aided-design, and bakery.
The medals tally ranked Odisha second among all Indian states, behind Maharashtra that won a total of 20 medals. Winners of the India Skills Competition will head to the World Skills International, known as the Olympics of skills being held in Kazan, Russia this year.
“The skill competition is a great opportunity to showcase our talents. I am very happy for winning gold medal. The Odisha Skill Development Authority (OSDA) helped us to great extent in shaping our talents. I am looking for the World Skills competition,” said Anup Bharti, who won gold medal in restaurant services.
AMHSSC Aims to Train 2 million employees by 2022
The Apparel, Made-Ups and Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council (AMHSSC) is laying down plans to impart managerial, supervisory and technical skills training to two million employees by 2022, reported KP Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Skill development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE).
KP Krishnan was speaking in Tirupur where he inaugurated the AMHSSC’s Center of Excellence (CoE), which was built at a cost of Rs 2 crore. ‘The council has set up another CoE in New Delhi. These centres would basically be involved in research work on apparel manufacturing technology and would be conducting short-term management development programmes and supervisory development programmes for the managerial and supervisory resources in apparel manufacturing units for productivity enhancement,’ he said.
‘The CoE is important to the industries in the Tirupur knitwear industry because of the availability of unskilled labourers from various parts of the country, especially Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Odisha,’ added Krishnan. ‘Skill India focuses on the scale of skilling, quality and employability, and aspirations for acquiring skills. With state-of-art facility, the CoEs will focus on training existing employees on those grounds.’
The two CoEs have been modeled in a public-private partnership with the AMHSSC at the helm to shift ‘the centre of gravity to industries from the government,’ Krishnan said.
Maruti Suzuki Inaugurates Centre of Excellence
The Centre of Excellence (CoE) is the outcome of an MoU inked in 2018 between Maruti Suzuki and the government of Haryana to upgrade the government polytechnic at Manesar with advanced technical training facilities and contribute to the Skill India initiative. The CoE has the potential to benefit 5,000 polytechnic students annually from polytechnics across the state over and above shop floor employees from the automobile and auto component sectors. Trainees will be skilled in weld, paint and assembly jobs, AutoCAD etc.
