Re-hauling of 2,500 ITIs will be on top of the agenda for the newly formed regulator, the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET), formed last year after the merger of two earlier skills regulators, the National Council for Vocational Training and the National Skill Development Agency. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) is keen for the NCVET to hit the ground running and work with states to look at ways to inject fresh investment into ITIs to bring them up to the mark.
An official of the MSDE said, “Handholding states and funding them to upgrade their ITIs is our top priority. This will take apprenticeship to the next level by boosting capacities 10-fold across all levels. More apprenticeship numbers will be a win-win for both employer and the candidate and have immense job potential.”
The NCVET’s main functions will be to establish minimum standards for entities engaged in vocational training and education in areas such as skills assessment, regulation of awarding bodies, and qualification standardisation.
